Description of the attires reflecting North-East India...
“Adoror Pusaak” (Loving attires) By Priyadarshini Inman
Silk production and weaving are an intrinsic part of North-East specially Assamese culture. In this northeast State, sericulture is dominated by mulberry (Pat) silk, which is white; the golden Muga; and the warm but coarse Eri/ Endi. Muga, often called the pride of Assam, is unique to the state. Its beautiful golden hue lends itself for artistic weaving is one of the costliest silks available in the world. It is produced from the cocoons of the worm Antheraea Assamensis which, in the whole wide world, is found only in Assam. Paat silk is extracted from mulberry silkworms raised on the leaves of the mulberry plant; and Eri is another popular Assam silk that is made from the Samia Cynthia Ricini, a worm fed on the leaves of the castor oil plant. The silk threads are woven in traditional handlooms known as taat-xaal. Cotton threads are also commonly used to create garments.
The state of Assam comprises of several indigenous tribes and each tribe has infused their own unique weaving patterns and styles into these garments. Rabha, Dimasa, Karbi, Bodo are a few names. The traditional Assamese two-piece garment worn by women is called the mekhela-sador. Mekhela is the lower pleated skirt and sador is long fabric that is draped across the upper body. In the Bodo tribe the dokhona, a long piece of fabric wrapped across the body, is the traditional attire of the women. The Rabhas attire comprises of a lower skirt called the rifan, a fabric wrapped around the bust called the kambun and a scarf called the pajar. The women’s attire is similar to the Assamese mekhela sador, lower part is known as a rigu and an upper covering known as rijamphain.
Besides, the other north east states have its own unique attire as well Manipuri wears, Inaphi a Phanek and Sarong. People from Tripura wears rikutu' for the loin and 'kamchwlwi borok' for the upper part of the body. West Bengal is also famous for its own weaving. Taat Saree, Jamdani are a few names that they wear at any occasions.
Priyadarshini Inman has been trying to popular the north east weaving in order to support the weavers by showcasing them in many events. She has done many shows including in Greensboro, Raleigh and Charlotte

Thank you, for supporting the cause,
