Dr Bhaskar Bora - Thyroid Cancer Advocate

Dr Bhaskar Bora, shares his inspirational journey… Our Hero

United Kingdom

In Dr Bhaskar’s words.. his MOTIVATIONAL story…

“Just when life seemed rosy and the sun was shining, I sustained a severe spinal cord injury in July 2019 following an operation and was then diagnosed with cancer of the thyroid.  These unexpected, devastating diagnoses left me with paralysis of both legs, a non-functioning right hand and a long stay in the hospital, eventually leading to a forced medical retirement from my successful medical career and a wheelchair in place of a sports car. I had to undergo multiple operations but am now permanently disabled. I also needed the removal of my thyroid gland for the cancerous tumour. Fortunately, the cancer had not spread elsewhere maybe because of the awareness as a doctor as it was diagnosed (mis) quite early on.

With a family so young I just could not afford to give up yet, so I had to re-learn walking (limited distance with crutches), writing, holding a knife, fork and lots of other daily routines but most importantly had to retrain my mind to accept the new normal. However, these adverse life-changing experiences made me into a person of faith, gratitude and inspiration.
Poorer financially but richer in experiences of life I am now a voice for the disabled and have written the book 'The Second Chance in Life' as an honest reflection of my life experiences to motivate people that every adversity can still be turned into an opportunity. That it is important to be filled with gratitude and appreciation for all the things that we take for granted. I regularly also blog on my website www.drbbora.com and undertake assignments as a Motivational Speaker.
In ‘The Second Chance in Life’ as a confessed workaholic, I acknowledge the challenges and miracles that have influenced my life and, in an honest style, share how even your darkest days can be a springboard for positivity. How important acceptance and resilience are in turning adversities into opportunities. This book also shows the need to appreciate every small thing in life and not take anything for granted. With various real-life examples and practical strategies, this book is an inspirational work for self-help and motivation and is a story of a victorious battle against cancer and severe disability.
We cannot control what the universe throws at us, but how we react to these life's curveballs define who we are. Maybe this poem sums up the hope and courage of every winner in this battle-

TOMORROW IS MY TURN

The longest mile

I want to walk

The highest mountain

I want to climb

An albatross I want to be

Flying high

Touching the sky

The hairpin bends

I want to drive

The deepest ocean

I want to swim

The ultimate dream

I want to dream

The past was dark

The present is still bleak

Who knows about the future

Maybe the heavens will speak

I may not walk today

Tomorrow I may run

I may be in pain today

Tomorrow is my turn

I dream, I dream

To hope and glory

To humanity and bliss

To health and peace.

Maybe the heavens will speak.
