Nancy M Cappello, PhD
Founder & Director, Are You Dense, Inc., &
Are You Dense Advocacy, Inc.
Woodbury, Connecticut USA
I was diagnosed with late-state breast cancer in 2004. My breast cancer diagnosis catapulted me to launch two non-profit breast health organizations, Are You Dense, Inc., and Are You Dense Advocacy, Inc., with a mission to educate the public about the risks and screening challenges of dense breast tissue to prevent missed, delayed, and advanced-stage cancer, thus reducing mortality. My advanced diagnosis inspired Connecticut’s first-in-the-nation density reporting law passed in 2009, making the state a global leader in density reporting, adjunct screening, and the density reporting grassroots movement.
Nearly two-thirds of the United States have since enacted density reporting laws and a federal bill is introduced in the United States’ Congress. I have been honored to present my story of patient-turned-advocate across the United States and internationally, including Canada, Rome, Tokyo, Paris, Puerto Rico and Brisbane Australia. My blog, Nancy’s Chalkboard, is published by the Huffington Post. My work and advocacy has been recognized in my hope of inspiring women to take charge of their health, including their breast health. Parade Magazine, honored me as a Health Hero in addition to being recognized by the Connecticut Women’s Hall of Fame, as a health advocate and was recently recognized with the Americanism award by UNICO, a tribute to my Italian ancestors who gave me the gift of appreciation and charity.
My relentless pursuit of education has afforded me multiple opportunities to teach and lecture about breast health in addition to children’s educational issues. I earned a B.A. and an M.S. in Elementary and Special Education from Central Connecticut State University, a Sixth-Year Degree in Administration and Supervision from Southern Connecticut State University, and a Ph.D. in Education Administration from the University of Connecticut.
I am honored to be a mentor to Dr. Lopamudra Dasroy as she launches Breast Cancer Hub with a Mission that is deep within my heart and soul to educate men & women world-wide about the health risks of breast cancer and making breast cancer screening accessible to all. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide and the second cause of cancer deaths among women. All women are at risk of having breast cancer. Therefore, it is critically important for women to do our part to keep healthy. One of the ways is to participate in breast screening for its benefit in finding cancer at its earliest stage. Our Goals of Are You Dense, Inc. & Are You Dense Advocacy, Inc.
EDUCATE THE PUBLIC about breast health;
IMPROVE THE CONDITION of those diagnosed with breast cancer;
ADVOCATE CHANGES TO PUBLIC POLICY about the prevention and treatment of breast cancer and
SUPPORT NEW AND EXISTING RESEARCH about the prevention, treatment of breast cancer and a cure for metastatic disease to improve quality of life, survival outcomes and end death from breast cancer.
